Morning Ritual-Matcha Latte with Adaptogens

Starting the morning with a ritual can be a very nice way to welcome the new day.  Whether it is a cup of tea or a cup of coffee, this consistent act somehow eases oneself into the day ahead.  Making a quiet ceremony in the morning, gives one time to reflect and hopefully move about the day before them in a more positive and meaningful way.

One our favorite morning rituals is relaxing with a matcha latte fueled with adaptogens.  Matcha is a premium green tea powder from Japan.  The tea is renowned for numerous health benefits.  Matcha is rich in nutrients, antioxidants, fiber and chlorophyll. The beautiful thing about matcha tea is that brings a sense of alertness and focus to the mind, but allows us to remain calm and relaxed.  One doesn't feel those caffeine jitters that can come from other caffinated beverages.  Matcha is also very rich in antioxidants, it is a body detoxifier, an helps restore the immune system.  Our favorite way to enjoy a morning matcha is on its own, mixed the traditional way or latte style with added adaptogens to create a power house beverage to start the morning off right.

Let us touch base on the topic of adaptogens.  Adaptogens, a class of incredibly powerful plants that has been used in ancient Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for centuries, aid in stress reduction and help boost energy levels.  Further, each plant can provide a multitude of other health benefits depending on the aliment one hopes to heal.  Essentially adaptogens are healing herbs and plants that promote the restoration, balancing, and protection of the body from adverse influences, such as stress. Quite amazing, right?

If you are new to adaptogens, here at Field Trip we always recommend trying Ashwagandha out first.  Ashwagandha is vital herb in Ayurvedic Medicine with a long history of therapeutic use and is sometimes referred to as "Indian Ginseng."  The plant contains a full spectrum of healing properties such as:

  • Tonify the immune system
  • Inspire Vigor and Strength
  • Increase the body's levels of Super Oxide Dismutase
  • Harmonize Mind, Body, and Spirit
  • Reduce the effects of mental, emotional, and physical stress

After Ashwagandha, we like to recommend mushroom powders.  Mushroom powders are grounding and highly immune supporting.  For instance, Reishi, "The Mushroom of Spiritual Potency" in Traditional Chinese Medicine, is one of the most potent adaptogens available to modern society. Reishi promotes radiant health and long life by helping to harmonize the functions of the body, mind, and spirit. Some of the pharmacological effects of Reishi extracts are as follows:

  • Analgesic
  • Anti-allergic activity
  • Bronchitis-preventative effect, inducing regeneration of bronchial epithelium
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Antibacterial, against Staphylococci, Streptococci, and Bacillus pneumoniae (perhaps due to increased immune system activity)
  • Antioxidant, by eliminating hydroxyl free radicals
  • Antitumor activity
  • Antiviral effect, by inducing interferon production
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Immune-strengthening
  • Stress-relieving
  • Liver protective
  • Improves circulation
  • Protective against radiation, free radicals, and other environmental stressors
  • Anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-fatigue, and anti-stress

We could go on and on about other mushroom powders and many more adaptogens, but will keep it short and get to what we really wanted to share,  our favorite way to incorporate matcha and adaptogens into a morning ritual.
