Theres something quite hypnotizing about the woody, earthy, yet sweet smell of cedarwood essential oil. It is both soothing and grounding, like being wrapped up in a warm, heavy blanket with a cup of tea. Used heavily for its aromatic quality in incense and perfume, it was somewhat surprising to find how many powerful medicinal properties are attributed to this modest and unsuspecting oil.
Cedarwood essential oil is extracted through a process of steam distillation from the wood pieces of a number of different juniper and cypress trees. Most commonly used plant is the Juniperus Virginiana, which is native to high altitude, cold climate regions. Cedarwood's power-house components are Alpha Cedrene, Beta Cedrene, Cedrol, Widdrol, Thujopsene and Sesquiterpene all of which contribute to its properties as an anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antispasmodic, tonic, astringent,, expectorant, insecticide, sedative & fungicide.
